Metal Magic and Earth Treasures
I recently found my long hoarded stash of driftwood from when I lived next to the beach in Scotland - the joy!
Ferns and Roots ~ Main and second two photos ~ Embellished with Ferns, fronds, tiny faery cups lichens. A Quartz Crystal point at the top and Quartz Crystal Orb at the base. Painted and sealed with a wash of matt varnish with iridescent gold shimmer. It measures approx 11"
At water's Edge ~ second three photos ~ In my stash of Driftwood I found .... A Heron ... and a baby Heron!!!
I combined them with another piece using polymer clay reeds and pebbles , textured the wood stand with a pyrography tool and painted with a thin wash of pigment and varnish.
It stands approx 11" high and is 7" long
Bramble and Bee ~ third three photos ~ Embellished with a Quartz Crystal point, Bramble leaves and Blackberries a magic flower and a tiny bee! protected by a fine wash of matt varnish with iridescent gold shimmer. It measures approx 9 1/2"
Ogham Pocket Wands ~ fourth two photos ~ These are embellished with Oak Birch and Alder leaves made from polymer clay and paint with a Quartz crystal point. Each one is pyrographed with the Celtic Ogham Rune for its month.
Oak ~ June 10th - July 7th
Alder ~ March 18th - April 14th
Birch ~ December 24th - January 20th
They measure approx 4 - 4 1/2"
I work primarily with a medium called Metal Clay - it comes in many different types - I mostly use Silver, Bronze and Copper, which I model, carve, mould, fire it in a small jewellers kiln, and voila ... ALCHEMY! I combine this with traditional metalsmithing techniques and gemstones.
Just a note on the types of Silver I use ... Fine Silver is 999% pure silver and is very white and beautiful, but very soft - which is useful for some applications, but not others - when I refer to *Enriched Sterling* the purity is roughly 950-960 and sometimes even as high as 975 (Standard Sterling is 925) - also soft and malleable but after firing a lot stronger than pure (Fine) Silver.
